Steven Baumgartner, PE, EcoDistricts AP, CEM, HBDP, LEED AP is an Principal at SmithGroupJJR leading Urban Systems and Infrastructure Strategy. He specializes in integrated infrastructure planning, energy strategy, and sustainability framework development and implementation. He has a rich history of creating unique solutions to assist his clients in meeting their high-performance, economic and strategic missions across scales. He lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA and supports several local initiatives.
Steven works on projects at scale all over the world including multidisciplinary infrastructure and carbon planning projects for higher education, cultural, corporate, non-profit and municipal clients. Linking to SmithGroupJJR’s diverse expertise, he bridges the technical and analytical work with community driven solutions. He is known for being a highly energetic and passionate individual, pushing his clients and collaborators to think beyond traditional disciplinary and systems boundaries.
Steven teaches and lectures at colleges and universities throughout the country and has supported sustainability and performance curricula at Cornell, Columbia, Yale and CMU. He regularly speaks about low carbon campuses and pathways for success, with lectures including; “Taking Zero Net Energy from Building Scale to Campus Scale”, “Strengthening Sustainability Action Plans: Expanding the Scope of Carbon Assessments” and “Resources for the Mission – Approaches to Integrated Planning for Campuses, Districts and Communities”.
