Yesterday, Governor Hochul signed into law the Advanced Building Codes, Appliance and Equipment Efficiency Standards Act, which will save New Yorkers $15 billion in utility bills by 2035. Urban Green helped drive passage of the law through early analysis, stakeholder engagement and legislative advocacy. It’s a big win for environmental justice and climate progress.
Touted by NYS Assemblywoman Pat Fahy as “the best climate and energy policy you’ve never heard of,” the law requires updates to the state’s Energy Code to achieve energy efficiency and—for the first time ever—greenhouse gas reductions in support of the state’s landmark Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). The law also overhauls the state’s appliance efficiency standards program and adds new standards for 30+ products, including TVs and computers, yielding $6 billion in utility bill savings by 2035 for low- and moderate-income households.
