2016 List of Zero Net Energy Buildings

We’ve just returned from hosting the third Getting to Zero National Forum in Denver, Colorado. It was an inspirational and educational extravaganza, with over 300 leading minds from a wide variety of fields sharing their best ideas and expertise around Zero Net Energy (ZNE) buildings. We are more excited than ever to share our knowledge as we push toward a zero-carbon sustainable future.

We at NBI are happy to announce the release of the 2016 List of Zero Net Energy Buildings. This year’s list showcases hundreds of commercial and multifamily buildings that are defining the leading edge of high-performance. The ZNE buildings on this list have either achieved or committed to the goal of producing as much renewable energy onsite as they consume over the course of a year. ZNE buildings have seen dramatic growth in the last decade, and especially in the last year. In 2015 we listed 191 ZNE Verified and Emerging projects whereas this year we list 332. That’s an increase of 74% in a single year!

While we’re confident that we have the most comprehensive list of commercial and multifamily ZNE buildings in North America, there are always more buildings being designed, built, and occupied, and it’s an ongoing effort to track the progress of this movement. In fact, we found out about a few more projects just between sending this list to the printer and releasing it publically! Please help us out by sharing your project with NBI so that we can include it on the next version.

The 2016 List of Zero Net Energy Buildings is available as a free resource online and can be downloaded from this page. Please share it far and wide. Help NBI spread the message that the zero energy future of the built environment is here and ZNE buildings are playing a growing role in moving us toward a more sustainable future.
